Introduction
This map of Lima was published in 1688 in a volume entitled La estrella de Lima convertida en sol. Since few maps of Lima had been published up to this point, it would soon become the most widely disseminated map of Lima in the 17th century. But like most city maps of the period, it was not created whole cloth by its author, Francisco de Echave y Assu. Instead, he was indebted to a little known map of the city, created by Pedro Nolasco Meré, which may have only circulated in Spanish court circles. The Nolasco map is also included in Vistas.
