Introduction
This church, San Pedro Apóstol, in the small town of Andahuaylillas, outside of Cuzco, was built for Jesuits evangelizing the region.
Iconography
The steeply pitched roof, overhanging the façade, echoes the traditional architecture in the region. The façade of the church, like the interior, was once painted.
Context/Collection History
Andahuaylillas lies in the rich Vilcanota river valley, about 40 km (25 miles) from Cuzco. This simple church stands in sharp contrast to the nearby urban jewel built in Cuzco by the Jesuits, La Compañía, which was far larger and more richly decorated both inside and out. This comparison reveals the range of building projects sponsored by the Jesuits in Spanish America.
